Open-source tools for building biomolecular systems with microfluidics

We are a group of researchers (main contributors are Dr Marcus Fletcher and members of the Elani group at Imperial College London) working on developing systems of biomolecules which can replicate functions currently only exhibited by living systems. Here, we want to share our research approach, how we try to study systems of biomolecules, and share experimental tools we have made with the community. Our aim is to make it easier for the biological research community to access the basic engineering tools we have found most useful in our research. To this end, here we will share links to print files for microfluidic devices and discussions of how we integrate them into our research, and also links and tutorials to the software we find helpful for experimental control and analysis.

Open-Source Projects

MultiCellPose

MultiCellPose is an app which allows you to run neural network based object detections to segment multiple types of object in images. You can use state-of-the-art trained models to automatically quantify size, shape and fluorescence distributions from your images, and easily label your own images to train custom multi-object detection models.To help you get started we have included tutorials on how to install and use the app.

Modular Microfluidics for Synthetic Cells

A toolkit of open-source modular microfluidic devices, methods and protocols for building synthetic-cell workflows. Explore modules for vesicle production, mixing, purification, manipulation and analysis, with practical guidance and downloadable design files.
